DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

a. About Department (History) –

The Department of Zoology has been functioning since the inception of the institute 1967. It is one of the oldest department with currently two full time, one CHB and two fix pay teachers.  Mr. M. R. Ghumnar was the first pioneer head of the department, in co-operation with lecturers Mr. L. N. Paritkar and Dr. V. R. Madlapure. The department offers Zoology course at B. Sc., M.Sc. Zoology and Ph. D.

In the year 2006, Dr. B. S. Salve joined to the department with the retirement of  Dr. V. R. Madlapure. Dr. B. S. Salve took charge of the headship of the department. Dr. P. P. Joshi joined to the department as senior faculty from 2009.

Dr. B. S. Salve and Dr. P. P. Joshi have been recognized as Research Supervisors by Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded and currently one student is awarded their Ph. D. degree and ten research scholars are working under their guidance. The department holds an excellent record of good results and various activities like certificate course, guest lecture, class seminars. The faculties have developed e-content and published the same through the e-platforms like YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp.

b. Aims and Objectives of the Department–

  • To develop scientific temperament among the students
  • To understand Anatomical structure of Vertebrates.
  • Explaining the basic aspects of evolution of various organs of vertebrates.
  • Understand the phylogenetic progression in vertebrate body and its systems.
  • To know about the extreme specialization in different organ systems in vertebrate groups
  • in response to the environment.
  • To get an insight into embryonic development of vertebrates.
  • To correlate developmental stages of different vertebrate groups.
  • To identify and describe the different embryonic structures of vertebrates.
  • To grasp the basic processes of human development.
  • Study the greenhouse effect and global warming.
  • Learn about pollution and its effects on ecosystems.
  • Study the adaptations of animals to different ecosystems.
  • Explore different environmental conservation and management techniques.
  • To learn about communicable and non-communicable diseases in humans.
  • To learn about pathological agents causing disease in man.
  • To study parasitic diseases in man and farm animals.
  • To understand biology of disease carrying vectors and their mode of transmission.
  • To learn about changes taking place in the human body upon infection by pathogens.

c. Course Outcomes

  • The student will be able to identify and understand the comparative anatomical structure of vertebrate organ systems.
  • The learner will be able to understand the evolution of various organs and systems in the vertebrate body according to its environment.
  • Understand the plasticity of organ systems to adapt to the environment and acquire different novel form.
  • The student will be able to explain the basics processes of vertebrate embryonic development.
  • Ability to describe the various steps in vertebrate development.
  • Identify and explain the different embryonic structures.
  • Describe the functions of different extra-embryonic structures.
  • Understanding of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies.
  • Describe the role of different gases in the greenhouse effect.
  • Identify and suggest remedial measures to deal with different types of pollution.
  • Identify and describe adaptations of animals to different ecosystems.
  • Suggest and develop conservation and management strategies for a particular ecological problem
  • Explain about the different pathogens causing disease in man.
  • Describe the different parasites causing disease and disability in man and animals.
  • Ability to elaborate about the life cycle and biology of disease carrying vectors; suggest preventive and control measures for the said diseases.
  • An understanding of the relationship between changes in the physiology of the host and progress of pathogenesis in human beings and animals.

d. Future Plans -

  • To organize the Certificate and Value-Added Courses.
  • To organize the Guest Lectures of Eminent Personalities.
  • To develop the Research Laboratory
  • To establish the MOUs with different institutions and organizations and undertake the various activities.
